Traditional software is built around a simple premise:

You open a tool because you want something specific. The system provides a set of actions that map directly to that result. Each interaction is defined, each step is predictable, and each path leads somewhere intentional.

The work is not figuring out what to do.

It’s executing toward a known end.

The system holds the structure of the problem so the user doesn’t have to.

AI doesn’t come with a predefined outcome.

It doesn’t present a set of actions or paths. It presents an open surface, capable of many things, but oriented toward none of them by default.

This is a fundamental shift.

The system no longer defines the problem.

It depends on the user to do it.

AI systems don’t execute instructions in the way traditional software does.

They interpret language.

That distinction matters.

In deterministic systems, inputs are commands. They are complete, explicit, and unambiguous. The system knows exactly what to do because every action has been defined in advance.

Language doesn’t behave like that.

It’s incomplete by nature. It carries meaning, but not precision. It signals direction, but not exactness. What is said is only part of what is meant.

AI removes that bridge.

Now the user is responsible for defining the context that the system needs to operate.

This is why the experience can feel unclear, even when the system is capable.

It’s not a usability issue. It’s not a feature gap. It’s a mismatch in how the interaction is structured.

The system is designed to interpret intent.

The user is oriented toward outcomes.

So the interaction stalls. Not because the system can’t produce a result, but because the input doesn’t fully describe the problem.

As AI becomes more capable, this doesn’t go away.

It becomes more important.

The systems that succeed won’t be the ones that can do the most.

They’ll be the ones that help users express intent in a way that produces the outcomes they actually want.

Not by adding more capability, but by reducing the gap between what people mean and what the system understands.
